Surprisingly， 500 or so wooden pagodas remained standing for centuries in Japan and only two collapsed during the past 1400 years because of the fires of lighting or civil war. The Hanshin earthquake of 1995 even left the five-storey pagoda at the Toji temple unscathed ， while the other buildings near the Toji pagoda were disastrously destroyed .Why? Because the builders of pagodas knew how to absorb some of the power produced by severe weather conditions.uRx红软基地
Both Chinese and Japanese pagodas had tiles on eaves and were used for original religious purpose first of all. But pagodas were used as watchtowers， with interior accesses to tops， only in China. The size of eaves were up to half the width of the pagodas in Japan to prevent rainwater gushing down the walls. More surprisingly， the floors of a Japanese pagoda are fitted loosely on top of each other so that under pressure a pagoda’s loose stack of floors can be made to slither to and fro independent of one another.uRx红软基地
In a Japanese pagoda， the shinbashira’s role is only to stop the floors moving too far. A structural engineer， known to his students as “ Professor Pagoda”， Shuzo Ishida has successfully performed experiments in order to learn about the dynamics of pagodas.uRx红软基地
