Before: I major in dress design.
After: I major in fashion design, (which includes the study of A, B, and C. )
After: I major in accounting, (which includes the study of financial reporting, management accounting, and auditing. )
Why did you choose to study that?
Before: Since I am a child, I want to design my own clothes.
After: Since I was a child, I had always wanted to design my own clothes. So when the opportunity presented itself, I chose to study fashion design without a single doubt.
Past perfect tense:
I had to cancel my trip to Santorini. I ___ ( plan it) for a long time.
I came down with the flu, and couldn’t take the IELTS test. I __(prepare for it) for a long time.
Would you say it’s a difficult major to study? Why?
Before: Actually, in this major, people would have the special ideas in the design.
After: Yes, I think it’s quite difficult. Unlike many other conventional majors, fashion design is all about creativity and change. Being a good student, reading textbooks, and doing assignments are not enough to guarantee us a good score. We have to push our limits, think outside the box, and read whatever there is to inspire us to come up with new ideas.
Do you know how to cook?
Before: I don’t know much about cooking. I just can do some easy cooking by myself.
After: I don’t know much about cooking. I just can do some easy cooking, such as making instant noodles, or frying eggs.
Did you learn how to cook when you were a child?
Before: No, I don’t have too much time to know about the cooking.
After: No, I didn’t have too much time to learn how to cook. Because when I was a child, I was occupied with study and extra curriculum activities. My mum would rather let me study and rest than cook.
Occupied = busy
occupied doing something/in doing something/in something: He's fully occupied looking after three small children.
occupied with something/with doing something: Only half her time is occupied with politics.
The most important thing is to keep yourself occupied.
Are you planning to learn any cooking in the future?
Before: Sure, I think, in my future, I must. And I would do something the better than now.
After: Definitely yes. As I am about to study and live abroad, I will have to feed myself. It’s better to learn some cooking before my departure, when my ideal tutor, my mum, is around.
Are there many advertisements in China?
Before: Sure, in the TV show, you also can see some, many advertising in this TV show.
After: Yes, indeed. Advertisements are everywhere. Whenever we turn on the TV, look through a newspaper, open the mailbox, or surf the Internet, advertisements would immediately jump into our sight. It’s no exaggeration to say that we live in the world of advertisements, and some of them are really lousy.
Advertise (v.)
Advertisement (n.) BrE / ədˈvɜːtɪsmənt/ AmE / ˌædvərˈtaɪzmənt/
Advertising (n.): the activity and industry of advertising things to people
Publicity; ad; commercial; trailer (oald)
Advertisement: Put an advertisement in the local paper to sell your car. ◇ Dirty streets are no advertisement for a prosperous society.
ad (informal) :We put an ad in the local paper. ◇ an ad for a new chocolate bar
Publicity [uncountable] :She works in publicity. ◇ There has been a lot of advance publicity for her new film.
Commercial: mainly on television or on the radio.
trailer (especially British English): a series of short scenes from a film/movie or television programme, shown in advance to advertise it.
Why are there so many advertisements now?
vs. what’s the purpose of advertising?
Before: I know the products needs advertising. It can broaden their information.
After: Because advertisements can make commercial brands known to consumers, and talk them into buying the advertised goods or services. Besides, everyone is doing it, no matter old or new brands. Those who don’t would feel falling behind their competitors.
Do advertisements ever influence your choice about what to buy?
Before: Yeah. Because we don’t have too much time to know one by one the products, so we need the advertising to know which is the best or which is baddest.
After: I have to say yes. Because when I want to buy something, especially something I am not familiar with, it’s difficult to decide which brand to choose, since they look almost the same. Then I tend to choose the one advertised. It seems more reliable than those I've never heard of.
Know ≠ finding things out
Know: have learnt it
Getting knowledge: find out (about sth) , get to know, can tell.
Where did you find out that she’s married?
I want to travel around the world and get to know people from different countries
He’s from Singapore, as you can tell from his accent.
Identify: to be able to say who or what somebody/something is
It’s getting increasingly difficult to identify false advertising.
Recognize: to know who somebody is or what something is when you see or hear them/it, because you have seen or heard them/it before
I immediately recognized that pair of shoes, because the ad was so memorable.
Name: to say the name of somebody/something in order to show that you know who/what they are
Most people are able to name the company from this slogan: just do it!
