The Jack-o-lantern custom probably comes from Irish folk（传说）.  A man named Jack， he was notorious（臭名昭著）because he likes drinking and tricking（骗人）.  One day he tricked Satan into climbing a tree， then he carved a cross on the trunk， not to let the devil（魔鬼）down the tree.  Then Jack made a deal with the devil， if he would never tempt（诱惑）him again， he would promise the devil down the tree.  Z9c红软基地

After Jack died， he wasn’t let to go into Heaven because of his evil（罪恶）ways， but he was also denied going into Hell（地狱）because he had tricked the devil. But the devil gave him a single ember（燃烧未尽的煤块）to light his way in the dark. The ember was placed inside a hollowed-out（挖空的）turnip（萝卜）to keep it glowing（发光） longer.
